    The short version


    Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has a name for it: AiFi — AI agents that trade, book services, and pay for APIs on their own, settling in stablecoins like USDC over the x402 protocol.


    AWS shipped the enterprise half. AgentCore Payments, built with Coinbase and Stripe, gives agents the ability to make instant microtransactions with spending limits and transaction tracking attached. One demo had an agent scan 2.2 million properties and book a hotel onchain.


    Millions of transactions are already flowing. The open question is not whether agents can pay. It is who is accountable when they do.


    What x402 actually is


    x402 revives the long-dormant HTTP `402 Payment Required` status code and makes it useful. An API returns 402 with a price; the agent pays in USDC; the request goes through. No signup, no API key, no invoicing cycle, no card on file.


    That matters because the classic blocker for autonomous agents was never intelligence. It was the checkout page. Every credential form, free-tier limit, and human-in-the-loop billing step was a hard stop in an otherwise automated workflow.


    Stablecoin rails remove the stop:

  2. Sub-cent transactions that card networks can't economically process
  3. Instant settlement, no 2–3 day clearing
  4. Global by default, no per-country payment setup

    An agent scanning 2.2 million properties and booking one onchain is a nice headline. The interesting detail is the economics: at fractions of a cent per lookup, an agent can afford to evaluate an inventory no human researcher would ever touch.


    That is the real unlock. Not "agents can buy things," but agents can afford to look at everything before buying. Exhaustive search becomes cheap.
